I’ve run a lot of races over the years. All different kinds, everything from the 800-meter sprint to a 26.2-mile marathon.

One thing remains true for the start of every single race I’ve ever run. There’s always a group of overzealous & inexperienced runners that break out in the first half of the run with a pace much faster than they can sustain.

You see them every time, bounding out of the starting gates at nearly a sprint even though the race may take 3 or 4 hours.

Some of these guys realize the folly in the first few minutes, correct, and settle down to a nice reasonable pace. Others try to keep it up until they finally hit the wall and realize there is no way they can continue. In some cases, especially in the long runs, they end up dropping out all together!

What I’ve learned over the years is to know yourself,  your limits, and pace yourself throughout the race accordingly.

I like to save a lot of energy for the last 30% of the race. So for a marathon, for example, I’ll maintain a very consistent pace right from the starting gate until around mile 18 or 19 then, I’ll steadily increase my pace for the remaining of the race.

This has such a powerful and profound impact on the other runners it’s both amazing and humorous.

Just when people are starting to hit their “walls”, I start to speed up and pass. It’s both defeating for them and energizing for me.

Just like running, business is very much a mind game. Very much a long long race, with unexpected and often very difficult roadblocks along the way.

Just like running, the others will start to drop out just when you should be picking up the pace, when you should be pushing harder, and working longer.

Know yourself, pace yourself, and push harder when others are quitting. At their breaking point, you’ll just be picking up speed.

Inspiration from Instagram post:

At the breaking point, keep pressing, the second half is when you pass the quitters.
Took this shot the other night just outside #sisteroregon. It reminds me that even if the view is clouded there are crystal clear skies just over the clouds.
