We have a “way” don’t we? A way of taking even the simplest things in life and “complicating” them to the point of difficulty and struggle.
Why do we do this?
Why do we take beautifully simple things and make them hard? Why do we brush off simple joys in life as nonimportant, or not significant?
There are many reasons for sure, often though, it’s as simple as guilt.
Our entire culture is built upon guilt.
Guilt for eating that cake
Guilt for sleeping in
Guilt for getting up early
Guilt for taking that vacation
Guilt for skipping that vacation
Guilt Guilt Guilt
So, often times when we start to feel joy in something simple like a field of flowers, the laughter of children, lyrics of a song, we feel guilty.
You might feel I’m overstating it, I’m not.?
Why do we avoid our children by working zillion hours to earn enough extra money to buy them toys or Disneyland trips, so they’ll be happy?
Mercedes is always showing me how to have more joy, less worry, and do amazing things.
Do you not think they would find more joy and happiness if instead, you spent that time with them, talking with them, going on walks with them, playing games with them, taking them to coffee and skipped the “things” they’ll never play with?
My littlest child is 7 in this picture, her name is Mercedes. She is a very small person, with a very big heart. She has been teaching me many lessons of joy in these last 7 years. Her laughter, bluntness, compassion, energy, and priorities have been an incredible teacher to me.
I’m learning to enjoy little things more, to embrace small moments, and share simple memories. I’m learning the “grandness” of an experience is more about the people, laughter, and togetherness, than it is about the location or rating on trip advisor.
It’s time to start enjoying the simple things, life needs NOT be so complicated.
